Learn 3 Variations on a Theme with Touches of Texture and Artistically Asian

The projects in this post feature a MUST-KNOW technique for every paper crafter. It's incredibly simple but the effect is really a WOW. The first project shown here is card #3 of the May/June FREE Card Kits and was one of my club projects at my May events. There are still a few days to qualify to receive these FREE Kits. There are more details ahead.

The card we made at my May events used a couple of retired products but this technique is so versatile that I will also show some additional samples in this post, featuring all current products.

This original design uses the (now retired) Helping Me Grow and Gorgeous Grunge Stamp Sets. I've also used the Touches of Texture Stamp Set. The following ink colors were used: Cucumber Crush (now retired), Island Indigo, Emerald Envy and Basic Black.

The backround was created by sponging the Cucumber Crush (now retired), Island Indigo, and Emerald Envy Inks onto a piece of Whisper White Cardstock. I press and rub pretty hard with the sponge to get deep rich color. I also like to make sure it's not too uniform in coverage. In other words, I make sure to leave some lighter and darker areas to keep the background interesting, give it a natural feel and give the feeling of depth.

Here's are my basic steps:

  • After sponging I sprayed my big floral image with water and stamped on my sponged piece. The more water you use the more prominant and possibly blurry the image.
  • Then I stamped the "Thanks" in Black Archival Ink in the lower right hand corner.
  • The line drawn floral image was then stamped in the Black Archival Ink
  • The other natural image from the Helping me Grow set was then stamped in the Emerald Envy Ink in a few places along the bottom

Some final steps:
  • I used the Island Indigo Ink Pad with the speckled image from the now retired Gorgeous Grunge Stamp Set to stamp specks a bit here and there. You can see this in the close photos above and below.
  • The dragonfly image from the Touches of Texture Stamp Set was stamped in Archival Black Ink.
  • The focal piece was mounted on a Basic Black piece of cardstock and attached to an Island Indigo card base with Stampin' Dimensionals.

In the next projects the inks and stamps were changed so that the materials used are still current and therefore available to purchase. It was really fun to play with some variations. In fact, I brought these materials with me on a recent visit to see my mom and we played with this technique together. You will not want to miss her fun variations below. She did something really creative you've got to check out so make sure to read to the end! I brought several Stampin' Spots, sponges and a few stamp sets and it was really a blast to play together.

For this next card the only stamp set I used was the Touches of Texture Stamp Set. I used the solid floral image and stem to do my water stamping. Plus I used one of the long textural images along the sides to sort of frame the focal piece.

The color scheme is slightly different too. Island Indigo and Emerald Envy were used, just like in the first card but instead of using Cucumber Crush I used Pool Party toward the center and Tempting Turqoise along the edges. I think it turned out really pretty! Here's a close up:

In this next variation I just did a little extra stamping with the line drawn images. I stamped some in the Black Archival Ink and then more with the same image toward the center, in Island Indigo Ink.

There are a few more fun samples and variations to share but on these I totally changed up both the colors and the stamps that were used. I also added one additional technique into the mix. I love how they turned out and think you'll agree that these next samples really show how versatile and fun this technique is!

On this card here, the same exact process was used but instead the Artistically Asian Stamp Set was used. I brought this stamp set on my visit to see my mom because she especially likes Asian images so I thought she'd really enjoy playing with this set. She made her own variations which you'll see shortly.

The colors used for the sponging are Real Red, Cherry Cobbler and Basic Black.

In this next close up photo the subtle light images in the background were made with the Water Stamping as described earlier. This floral image produced a more subtle effect with the water, which is why I chose to stamp the image again over the top in the Cherry Cobbler Ink. While it is sublte, the water stamping in the background offers alot of depth to this scene.

The sponging that was done with the Basic Black ink is intended to be very subtle so I did this sponging with a very light touch. In the close up below you can see how light it is in the two places shown. Plus at the bottom you can see some of the water stamping really clearly.

So these next projects add yet another technique but I couldn't help but share them since they really are just variations on the theme of the cards previously shown.

The technique that was added on this next card is Bleaching. I did the same process described above and then stamped an image multiple times with bleach to get the images that are crisp and bright white.
To stamp with bleach, I simply wet a piece of felt with a little bit of water and placed it on a paper plate. I then poured a bit of bleach onto the wet felt. By doing this I essentially made myself a Bleach Filled Ink Pad. One word of CAUTION... DON'T LEAVE THE BLEACH ON YOUR STAMPS FOR TOO LONG. I'm just not sure what it will do to the rubber, so I'd have some baby wipes or a scrub nearby to clean your stamps soon after using them with the bleach just to be safe. Here's the card:

Here's a close up so you can really see all the techniques, sponging, water stamping (light bamboo images) and bleaching (white bamboo images)! Awesome right?!!!

Just a few more projects to share...

This next one only uses the Sponging and Bleaching (no water stamping here). Isn't this one striking!

So after I created all the cards you see above I shared what I had done with my mom and she set up to make some of her own fun creations. I really thought she'd want to play with the Reds but instead she chose the Blues. Below are the cards she made. She did a great job don't you think?

Being the creative person that she is, my mom added a lovely element on all three of her cards that I did not. Can you see the white specks in the sky? She wanted it to look like a starry sky so here's what she did...

She unfolded a paperclip and pushed it into the "Bleach Ink Pad". She then pressed the paper clip onto her focal piece. She did this multiple times to create all the specks you see. Isn't that so cool?!!! Yeh mom! You can see this element a bit better in the photo below. Check it out!

Please let me know what you think of her creative technique and I'll pass it along. My mom is 88, super healthy and active and I love that she enjoys to create together. I'd love to encourage her and know she would love to hear your comments and words of encouragement too! Please leave a comment!

FYI, If you want to see this technique in action check out my YouTube Video by clicking HERE. I've created videos for all three May/June Card Kits on my YouTube Channel too!

..."lets me friends forever". What a great treat it would be to get this card from a friend!

Here's a close up of my favorite element on this card... the medallion on the front. I just love the medallion paired with this striking color scheme of Tempting Turqoise, Cucumber Crush and Basic Black. The Cucumber Crush is a retired color as of the end of May. I will miss this color!

Eastern Beauty with Summer Colors

The Eastern Beauty Stamp Set is featured on the card I'm sharing today. This card was one of my club projects at my May events and it is card #1 of the May/June FREE Card Kits. You'll find more information about these kits and how to get them FREE later in this post.

I personally love the summery feel of this simple design. The product suite and the color scheme of the designer paper that goes with it, gives these products a sort of regal, formal and rigid sort of look. Taking the color scheme in a completely different direction (as shown in this card) makes these images look so much more fun and playful to me. I'd be curious what you think. Please comment on this post if you'd like to share your thoughts.

This project is really just simple stamping but the focal point is built using four images. That's one of the most fun aspects of this stamp set as all the images are designed to layer and combine. This is also the case with the coordinating framelits which offer endless possibilities for combining the pieces and parts. Card Kit #2 of the May/June Free Card Kits uses Medallions thinlits. More on that later.

I hope you've enjoyed this project. There's a complete supply list for this project and video tutorials for all three May/June Card Kits below. Plus remember... when you order by June 30th qualifying orders, will be eligible to receive my FREE Card Kits. BINGO Party Make n' Takes

At my Catalog Launch and BINGO party last Friday we made two projects featuring the Crafting Forever Stamp Set and the You Move Me Bundle by Stampin' Up!. I've included a bunch of photos of these projects with some fun variations.

Participants had two color schemes to choose from, and two options for how to create their card. The two color schemes were Dapper Denim or Berry Burst based on the designer paper (DSP) strip they chose. This DSP is from the Color Theory Designer Paper Stack.

This project was CASE'd from something I saw on Pinterest. I made one variation on the original design to attempt to make the project easier. In the original design and in my Berry Burst version above it requires that you fussy cut the scissors and stamp images. By doing this you can place these cut pieces over the pot of paintbrushes to have the scissors and stamp in the foreground. It looks great this way but I figured some people might not enjoy the fussy cutting so I came up with an alternative.

In my Dapper Denim version, we did a series of stamping and masking to create the same effect of having some images in the foreground and some in the backgroun. So in this second version, the scissors and stamp still look like they are in front of the pot but participants did not have to cut out those images to get that effect. Instead, I created masks ahead of time that they used. Here is a close up of the Dapper Denim version with the masking. Doesn't it look like the scissors is on top of the stamp and the stamp is in front of the pot?

Here's a close up of the version that did require fussy cutting.

On this last version I did a little extra coloring just for fun.

For the second project we used the new You Move Me bundle. When I first saw these products shown at the Stampin' Up! On Stage Event in Savannah, I just new I had to have them. While you can't see it here, when you pull up on the yellow tab, the butterfly image looks like it's flying. It is so cool! To see the Stampin' Up! video showing this bundle in action click HERE.

So this is the version that everyone made. There were a few choices for the sentiment which you will see ahead.

Here's a close up of the sentiment and the adorable little butterflies at the bottom. These are created with two images. The bottom image was stamped in second generation Pumpkin Pie ink. The smaller image over the top is stamped with first generation Pumpkin Pie ink.

Since this event was the Friday before Fathers Day I thought some people might want to use this sentiment for a Fathers Day card... "my heart FLUTTERS when you're around"... Cute right?

Here are a couple of others designs I created before I settled on the final version above. These two show the third option for a sentiment on this card. I love this sentiment too. To all of you that sent me love, well wishes and cards when my dad passed away last month... this sentiment goes out to you. I truly have been moved by your kindness!!!

The color scheme for the card above is Old Olive, Night of Navy and Marina Mist. The color scheme for the card below is Elegant Eggplant and Rich Razzleberry. Now for the card below you may be wondering how I got the opening to be longer. Well... I just ran my piece through twice, the second time carefully overlapping the portion that was already diecut as needed, to get the size opening I desired. Pretty cool huh? Having a bigger window allows the hummingbirds to really flutter which is so fun to see! I'm sorry I can't show it to you now.

I hope you've enjoyed these projects. There is a complete supply list below with links to my Online Store. Plus when you order this month, people with qualifying orders, will be eligible to receive my FREE Card Kits, which I think are really awesome! I expect to release three video tutorials, showing these projects in the next few day! Stay tuned!

PLUS, when you order now, I'll send you one of my NEW In Color bookmarks. This offer is only good WHILE SUPPLIES LAST! To check out these bookmarks click HERE and scroll down.

Crafting Forever Simple & Masculine?

The card I’m sharing today features two fabulous new stamp sets called, Crafting Forever and Wood Words (for the sentiment) from the Stampin’ Up! Idea Book and Catalog. This card was made by my Card Ministry group earlier this month.

Every other month I host a lovely group of women who make cards as part of a Card Ministry for their church. I donate my time and materials and have the pleasure of knowing that the cards made may provide comfort to someone in need of some extra love and community support. The cards need to be all purpose and a good fraction of them need to be gender neutral. Sometimes this presents a challenge for me but it’s a good challenge. It’s always useful to be able to share these cards with my customers and have these types of cards around for my own use as well.

Some Details:

  • The “pen” image is stamped in Archival Black Ink on Very Vanilla Cardstock and colored in with Basic Black and Soft Suede Stampin’ Write Markers.
  • I used some retired Kraft Twine for the element on the bottom
  • The focal piece is raised up on dimensionals.
  • The Kraft Rope Trim was unraveled to create three pieces and attached around the backside of the Very Vanilla focal piece using Tear & Tape. An additional unraveled strand was used to tie a knot.

A complete list of supplies are included at the end of this post.

Dimensions:
  • Soft Suede Card Body: 5-1/2” x 8-1/2”
  • Basic Black Focal Backing: 3-1/4” x 4-3/4”
  • Very Vanilla Focal: 3” x 4-1/2”
I hope you've enjoyed this Clean & Simple all purpose card!

Color Fusers Blog Hop: June 2017

Welcome to the June 2017 Color Fusers Blog Hop! The Color Challenge for the team this month was to use any or all of the following five colors, Basic Gray, Bermuda Bay, Old Olive, Rich Razzleberry and Whisper White. I actually ended up using all five colors and while it may appear that I used more than these five colors, I promise you I did NOT! Really... pinky promise! You'll understand what I mean when you see my cards.

So... my projects today were inspired by my dad who passed away in May. It's been a hard month to say the least as I'm sure you can imagine. I've shared a bit of my story in my newsletter and blog simply because I felt that I just needed to be real, otherwise I would feel invisible and false. I had mixed feelings about sharing as I am a pretty private person, in general, but I'm so glad that I did.

As I have reflected on my dads life, my family and myself I have felt so incredibly grateful for all the love and personal stories you have shared. It makes me choked up just thinking about it. So... as it relates to my projects today I just wanted to SEND HUGS AND KISSES out to the UNIVERSE... to my DAD, to my FAMILY and to this wonderful supportive COMMUNITY I'm so lucky to be a part of.

So, I have three cards for you today, all variations on the same theme and using the same techniques and materials. In creating these I hoped to express both my sadness and loss AND my deep joy and gratitude. Whether you see this or not, it truly has been therapeutic to create them.

Some details about these card:

  • The sentiment was stamped on Watercolor Paper, in Versamark Ink and then heat embossed in either Clear or White Embossing Powder. This first one was done in clear and the second two where done with white. You can tell the difference a bit better in person, as the white embossing is a bit more crisp.
  • The paper was then spritzed with water and I used my Aqua Painter and droplets of Ink from my ReInkers to watercolor with Old Olive, Bermuda Bay and Rich Razzleberry. I truly ONLY used these three colors! It was so fun to color these!
  • I let my sentiment piece dry completely and then covered the whole surface with Versamark and Clear Embossing Powder and then heat embossed. This makes the whole surface glossy and really makes the colors vibrant.
  • I used the rain-like image from the Lovely Inside & Out Set honestly because I was thinking about tears. I'll just admit it... I've shed a lot of tears lately and since this card was sort of inspired by my emotional turmoil, and many mixed emotions, it just seemed fitting.

More details:
  • For the side panel instead of heat embossing I used what I call a Hot Glue Resist. I use hot glue to create whatever pattern I like, watercolor with Reinkers and my Aqua Painter, and then remove the hot glue to reveal the pattern. Pretty cool huh!
  • On this side panel below I used some of the Basic Gray inl next to the Old Olive ink as you may be able to see. The Basic Gray didn't really work very well moving in the water. I'm sure that's because it's an archival ink. I just wanted to try to get some gray in the mix. I did not use the Basic Gray on my other cards.

As you can see on this next one I created a different pattern with my hot glue. Again... I was going for the feeling of rain or tears.

In the close up below you can see I have watercolored the sentiment piece with the Old Olive on the bottom and Rich Razzleberry on the top. I love how the color blended and how the Old Oive sort of "feathered" out into the Bermuda Bay. Watercoloring is one of my favorite techniques to play with!

WARNING!... Small tirade of creative excitement coming...
I just adore this next close up for so many reasons! I love the crisp white against the color and the random yet orderly shapes of the white elements. I love the way the colors blended, the light and dark shades of the greens and blues etc. Just looking at this makes me inspired to play more! So much fun right?! Please comment and let me know what you think!

This last card is like the Calm after the Storm! It's just simple and pretty. I so appreciate the Clean and Simple and yet the truth is, it never seems to be where I start. I love when I can get myself there in the end!

I hope you've enjoyed my projects today. There is a complete supply list at the end of this post. Plus... don't miss the rest of the Color Fusers Blog Hop projects! A complete list of participants can be found ahead.

Daisly Delight Cards... Variations on a Theme

About a month ago I shared a project made with the Daisy Delight Stamp Set and Daisy Punch by Stampin' Up! It was the first things I created with my new toys so used it for the April NC Demos Blog Hop. I decided to create some variations on that original card for a swap later in May and just love how they all turned out so wanted to share here. If you want to see the original design click HERE. Here are my variations on the original card:

The designer series paper (DSP) used on these cards comes from the Delightful Daisy Product Suite on page 127 of the new catalog. The color scheme is Night of Navy, Old Olive, Daffodil Delight, Pool Party, Tranquil Tide (a new InColor), Calypso Coral and Whisper White. That being said, I find that the Night of Navy elements in this DSP has a lot of purple hues in it so I chose to use an Elegant Eggplant card base and a layer of Wisteria Wonder to go behind the DSP. I think it works beautifully!

I also used the NEW 3/8" Mini Chevron Ribbon in Crushed Curry and Old Olive toward the bottom of each of these cards. This ribbon is very supple and easy to work with. I really like how the chevron pattern adds some texture but is still also subtle and pretty.

For a few additional details... I used my bone folder to curl and shape the petals of the two layered daisys that were stamped and punched out with the new Daisy Punch. The top daisy is attached to the bottom daisy with a dimensional. I've also added a gold faceted gem, one of my favorite new embellishments, to each flower to add an extra special touch. In my original post there is a close up of these embellishments so you can really appreciate how pretty they really are! Click HERE to see that post. A complete supply list is included ahead plus more!

If you love this designer paper and would like a complete tour of all the amazing designer series papers in the NEW Catalog check out the videos below. They videos are pretty quick and offer a great way to tour all these amazing papers!
